Chuck Taylor and the History of Converse All-Stars

Chuck Taylor All-Stars, Chucks, Converse All-Stars, Cons - whatever you call them, this shoe is one of the most successful shoes in history. Designed in 1917, the shoes have been overwhelmingly popular across decades and cultural revolutions.

It all started in 1908 when Marquis M. Converse opened the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in Malden, Massachusetts. Two years later, Converse was producing 4,000 shoes a day. But it was not until 1917 that the Converse sneaker really hit its mark. Marquis wanted to cash in on the new basketball craze that was sweeping the United States, and so he decided to create the Converse All-Star. In 1918 basketball player Chuck Taylor (who was still in high school at the time) received his first pair of Converse All-Stars and fell in love with the shoe. Taylor wanted to be a star basketball player. At age 17 he played for the Akron Firestones. But rather than finding fame on the basketball floor, Taylor ended up being one of the most important shoe salesmen and basketball evangelicals in history. In 1921, Taylor began working for the Converse Shoes office in Chicago. He proposed a few modifications to the Converse All-Stars design including extra ankle protection and great flexibility. Eventually, Chuck Taylor's signature would be sprawled across each All-Star patch that branded every pair of Converse All-Star sneakers. The shoes became the undeniable favorite among basketball players. When basketball first became an Olympic Sport at the 1936 summer Olympics, the United States basketball team triumphed over Canada. Each of the US players was wearing a pair of Converse All-Stars.

Taylor went all around the country selling Converse All-Star sneakers, but he never became rich from his shoe sales. In fact, all Taylor ever earned from Converse Shoes was his salary.

Keeping Healthy at Summer Music Festivals

If you're off to a festival this summer make sure you take some time before hand to prepare for all eventualities. Festivals are meant to be fun but they are also an ideal place for your health to suffer.

Firstly make some room in your rucksack to pack a first aid kit. A few essentials in between the glow sticks and cans of beer won't take up much room and you'll be thankful for it if you do pick up a bug, cut or burn. If you're on any regular medication make sure you take that with you too.

Sun Protection
Take at least Factor 15 sun cream or lotion and remember if you're out all day to apply it regularly. Even if it doesn't appear very sunny you can still get burnt from the rays that penetrate clouds. Bugs And Allergies
Not only can they be very painful or itchy, insect bites can also leave the skin prone to infection so do all you can to avoid getting bitten by using a spray or diffuser. If you do get bitten an antiseptic cream will help keep out infection. Anti-histamine tablets will help treat hayfever and other allergies. Also, if you are asthmatic remember to pack a spare inhaler.

Aspirin or Nurofen will help with the inevitable hangover after a few festival ciders.

Anti-Diarrhea Tablets
Change of diet, stress and food poisoning can all bring on an upset stomach. Contraception
If you're on The Pill remember to take enough with you to last your time away. It might also be worth you skipping the normal break if you're due to have your period at a festival although check with your doctor first. And throw in a few condoms just in case - even if you don't get lucky you can always 'lend' them to your friends.

One of the best things about festivals is sampling all the different types of food on offer but if you're not careful it's also a very easy way to pick up a nasty stomach bug. However, it's important that you keep well nourished as the drinking and dancing can really take their toll on your poor body.

If you have overdone it on the alcohol a starchy meal like pie and mash, fish and chips, a jacket potato or some noodles will help replenish your blood sugars and line the stomach for the next round of drinks. Although a sugar fix may seem like the easier option you'll only get a quick boost before feeling an energy slump again.

Vitamins and minerals are essential so try and eat some fruit - you'll find lots of stalls selling fruit kebabs, watermelon slices or smoothies which not only taste delicious but are good for you. They'll also go some way to replenishing lost fluids. If you have hurt your stomach lining go easy on the acid though and avoid things like undiluted orange juice.

Fresh water should be freely available on the festival site and it's important that you drink plenty to keep hydrated particularly if you have been sick or had diarrhea. Take a small bottle that you can carry with you and use water purification tablets to avoid contamination.

If you are worried about eating food purchased on site then take a camping stove or charcoal grill with you. There are plenty of tasty and healthy meals that can be cooked outdoors. Remember to always wash your hands before handling food and make sure food is cooked through thoroughly.

It's likely that you'll do a lot more walking than you're usually used to so give some thought to your poor feet as well as those you're sharing a tent with!

Don't buy a brand new pair of trainers or walking boots without wearing them in first. You're better off taking an old pair of comfy shoes as they're likely to get pretty dirty anyway. Do wear socks - thick hiking socks are great - and if you do feel your shoes rubbing stick on a plaster before you get a blister. Vaseline can also be a godsend to prevent sores.

Try and wash your feet at least once a day and make sure you dry them properly. Not only will this keep them smelling sweet but will prevent any fungal infections. If the sun comes out wear a pair of sandals or flip-flops to let your feet breathe a bit and take a pair of clean socks for each day you're there.

Running around barefoot in the grass may seem like a groovy thing to do especially when you're trying to get into the hippy spirit but the ground at a festival is likely to be full of hidden dangers like broken glass, needles, dropped food and the odd cow pat or two. So keep your shoes on and wear sandals or flip-flops instead so you can still feel the breeze between your toes.

If it rains and the ground gets muddy then you need to take extra care of your feet. Make sure you dry them thoroughly at the end of each day and don't leave soggy socks on for long. Having constantly wet feet can lead to trench foot so if your feet get swollen or blistered seek attention at the medical center immediately.

Kate Silverton, BBC's News Presenter, New Hairstyle

Kate is now wearing her hair in a hairstyle that was born out of the technique “Understanding Graduation”, number three in the collection from one of the dvd’s of Hairdresser-Training distant learning course.

This dvd shows the subtle ways the Graduation technique can be used to assist current styles and trends.

In the main, Graduation is only thought of in a traditional shape of the geometric haircut from the 70’s, the “Mary Quant look”, this is more commonly known as the Graduated Bob, recently re-created by Victoria Beckham, Posh Spice,in her new look that I recently described.

Graduation can be used in its subtle form to give lift to outlines on a haircut, such as Kate’s haircut, or it can be used to assist the outline to create interesting shapes on a layered haircut. If you cast your mind back to the days of the 70-80’s and the pop groups Duran Duran, and Spandu Ballet, you can see how graduation was used to give the shape from the outline to the longer layers of the lads haircuts.

To create the haircut, section the hair into quadrant sections parting the hair from, ear-to-ear and from the middle of the forehead to the middle at the nape area, making equal four sections.

Begin working on the side front section, either side, and cut an outline length with your 1st section, in Kate's hairstyle, around a inch from the bottom of the ear, cutting the hair as close to the head as possible. Then take the same section, holding the hair about an inch away from the head, cut around a quarter-of-an-inch off the same outline. This may seem strange but bare with me. The next section, comb down and hold this around an inch-and-a-half away from the head and cut, using the previous section as your guide, cut on the same line as you can see underneath. This is creating graduation, work up the head with your sections and pull farther away as you work through the side of the head.

Now do the exactly same that you have done at the side of the head, but do this at the back of the head, creating this graduation. Once the other side of the haircut has been completed, it just a matter of drying the hair with a round brush, but blowing the hair upwards to give an exaggerated look of the hair coming out from the head.

Kate’s hair is then layer through the top sections, using medium length layers to give lift.

The technique shown on the dvds can then be used with a layering technique, (as used on Kate's haircut), that helps the hair spike upwards, almost defying gravity. When this is combined with the use of products to give added texture to the look and a “Ruffled look”, you can then create the style Kate is now wearing.

Everyone likes a bargain and it is this time of the year, when sales are in full swing that we head out to the stores in search of a great bargain. The question is, are you really getting a bargain when you buy clothing that doesn’t fit well – a pair of boots at seventy percent off but a size too big – or a sweater that you will never wear because it doesn’t match a thing you own.

Before you hit the stores looking for bargains, decide how much money you want to spend. A great sale has the potential to be a spending trap that will leave your pocketbook empty and your closet overstuffed with items that you will wish you had never bought – like the boots that are too big and keep slipping off.

Here are 5 shopping rules that will help you come home with clothing items that are real bargains that will make you look and feel good.

Rule # 1. Know exactly what you need. Take inventory of your clothing and write a list of items that will expand your wardrobe – a red top that you can wear with five other items in your closet.

Rule # 2. Buy only what you need. If you have five white t-shirts that are in good condition and exactly the same cut you probably don’t really need another one.

Rule # 3. If you are working with a budget stay away from that great plaid, flowery or embellished bag if most of your wardrobe is patterned and none of the colors in the bag match the clothing you already have.

Rule #4. Don’t be seduced by a low price. No matter how expensive it was if it doesn’t fit don’t buy it. You might find the best looking designer jacket at a low, low price but if it’s the wrong color or it doesn’t suit your body type you will not likely wear it.

Rule #5. Shop prepared. If you are shopping to find a blouse to match a certain pair of pants, wear the pants shopping. Or if you are buying a skirt wear heels or take an appropriate pair of shoes with you to get a better idea of how the skirt will look.

The original swoosh logo was originally designed in 1971 by a student studying graphic design at Portland State University. Carolyn Davidson was paid $35 for the famous design but some sources say that the co-founder of Nike, Phil Knight, later bought her a diamond ring engraved with the Nike logo and also an undisclosed amount of Nike stock after she left the company in 1983. It's interesting to note that Knight originally wasn't too impressed with Davidson's work. He said, "I don't love it, but it will grow on me."

Nike currently employs more than 30,000 people around the world and makes other sports apparel and equipment besides shoes. Recently the company has been under some scrutiny because of concerns associated with human rights and poor working conditions. It's estimated that in 2008 the company made a net income of around $1.9 billion dollars. The name Nike comes from the Greek goddess of victory, and like many other successful companies, had a humble beginning. Philip Knight was a track athlete at the University of Oregon and joined up with his coach, Bill Bowerman, in 1964 to sell shoes out of their cars at track meets. At that time they called themselves Blue Ribbon Sports.

Originally, the duo sold shoes developed by a Japanese manufacturer but ended their relationship with the company in 1971. In 1971 they developed their own line of footwear made especially for football and decided to call it Nike. Soon they introduced more lines of shoes. In 1978, they dropped the Blue Ribbon Sports name and by 1980, 50% of shoes sold in the United States carried the Nike brand. The Nike company still has headquarters in Oregon and currently owns several subsidiaries including Umbro and Converse. At one time, Nike also owned Bauer Hockey and Starter.

Boots are better than shoes for all sorts of reasons. They are more durable. They last longer. They protect your feet from potential dangers better than shoes do. The list goes on and on. However, real life anecdotes help drive home the idea better than just making a list. Here is a list of experiences that demonstrate the point.

1) When you drop an eighty-pound speaker cabinet on your foot, the steel toed work boots you are wearing protect your feet from being crushed. Meanwhile your friend who was only wearing a pair of Converse All Stars now has a smashed foot with lovely purple toenails.

2) While cruising on your motor scooter your only brake cable snaps and you are forced to press your thick Vibram lug sole work boots to the pavement in order to stop. In a similar incident your girlfriend wears shoes while riding her moped. Unable to get her machine to stop because her shoes were inadequate to the task at hand, she now sports a nice scar on her hip marking the spot where she became one with the asphalt.

3) Being a short female, less than five feet, in a bar sucks. Wearing a nice pair of women’s western boots can give you a solid two-inch lift and the stability that isn’t offered by a pair of stiletto heels. Plus when the drunken guy next to you tries to balance his beer on your head you have the option to kick him in the package without fear of the toe breakage that an open toed shoe would be vulnerable to.

4) Your friend falls off his skateboard and sends it careening your way. It hits you in the ankle. You end up with only a small bruise because you have a nice pair of Lacrosse work boots on that cover your ankle with thick leather. Thank goodness you didn’t wear tennis shoes because you’d probably have a fractured ankle.

5) Out on a summer picnic with your girlfriend you spy what looks like a rounded up pile of dog feces. Before you are able to react the dark brown-coiled object lunges at your feet and bangs its head against your boot. I further examination you find two tiny semi punctures with trailing scrap marks in the leather. Rattlesnakes can ruin picnics if you don’t watch where you are walking and wear leather boots.

6) It rains roughly three inches in less than an hour in your neighborhood. The city drains begin to back up from the deluge and become choked with debris. The streets are now flooded with two feet of standing water. Luckily you have a pair of Muck boots which you deploy thereby keeping your feet dry and protected against the floating trash within the water. You unclog the nearest drain, which stops the water from almost entering your home. Your neighbor wears a pair of Nike shoes and gets a nasty gash on top of his foot from a submerged spiked palm frond. You trudge onward protected by thick rubber boots.

7) You try to recapture your youth and buy a pair of Converse All Star tennis shoes. These shoes proceed to do everything in their power to murder your feet. Pain permeates your body with each step you take. You swear you don’t remember them hurting like this when you were in high school. You buy a pair of plain looking Tony Lama cowboy boots. You slip them on and they become the most comfortable footwear you have ever owned. You don’t take them off for two years. Your girlfriend is concerned. You get a new girlfriend and give the All Stars to the Salvation Army. Boots rule!

No matter if your experience is out of the ordinary or not, boots just do a better job of keeping your feet in good health. Don’t mess around with footwear and stay standing and walking by wearing good boots.
